Essential Oil Use With Cats
What are (Young Living) Essential Oils?
(Young Living) True, pure essential oils are distilled from plants as subtle volatile liquid, the
life-force, the regenerating and oxygenating immune defense properties of plants containing vitamins, minerals, enzymes and hormones. They are distilled from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes and seeds. Essential oils are fifty times more potent than herbs. They have a very unique lipid structure including oxygenating molecules that gives them the ability to penetrate cell membranes and transport oxygen and nutrients inside each cell of the body within only 21 minutes of their application and,in some cases, within seconds.
Essential oils help promote emotional, spiritual and physical wellness. Shelf life of pure essential oils is a minimum of 2000 years as shown by the oils retrieved in King Tut's Tomb. Essential oil frequencies range anywhere from 50 MHZ to 340 MHZ (Rose Oil). They have a bio-electrical frequency that is several times greater than the frequency of herbs, food and even the human body. Clinical research has shown that essential oils can quickly raise the frequency of the body, restoring it to normal healthy levels. Every molecule of essential oils have the ability to: increase oxygenation of the cell by 21%; take nutrients into the cells; remove toxins from the cells; cross the blood/brain barrier; increase the immune system within the body. These five items give the cells the ability to balance themselves, therefore regenerate healthy cells. One drop of Therapeutic essential oil will penetrate every cell within the body within 21 minutes. As an example of the concentration of these oils, one drop of Lemon oil is equal to the rinds of 50 organic lemons.
Unlike synthetic chemicals, essential oil chemicals are diverse in their effects. No two oils are alike.
Essential oils are one of the highest known sources of antioxidants that can prevent free radical damage. They also contain
a bio-electric frequency that is several times greater than that of herbs and food. Thus, these oils have a profound effect of raising the frequencies of the animal's (and human's) body -- aiding supporting a healthy immune system.
With all that I just mentioned, such as high frequency, high oxygenating molecules, fast delivery systems to the cells, immune promoting properties, etc., essential oils may assist in aiding the body to eliminate free radical damage as well as the potential dangers of our electro magnetically polluted environment.
USING Essential Oils ON CATS
CATS have a higher vibration or frequency than humans and possibly even higher than dogs. Because of this, they do not do well with lower vibrations such as are found in essential oils that are high in phenols. They need just a fraction of an amount of essential oils that a dog would. Since Young Living EO's are therapeutic grade, this means they are extremely concentrated so with cats, LESS IS BETTER.
Cats, even though mammals and carnivores, are known to be deficient in their ability to eliminate compounds through hepatic glucuronidation (they lack enzyme glucuronyl tranferases). The lack of this ability prevents them from being able to metabolize the phenols and benzyl alcohols present in most essential oils due to being adulterated, grown with pesticides or chemically based fertilizers, etc. So, this in turn, causes high amounts of toxicity in the body and could cause serious illness or even death. This is why It is imperative that the chemical compounds in the essential oils you wish to use with your cat, are known before using them.
Cats being so very chemically sensitive, can react strongly and even be poisoned by an essential oil that is adulterated, grown with the use of pesticides or even distilled in a less than optimum manner. So PLEASE do not experiment with just any essential oils on your cats. Purity is everything when using essential oils Young Living Essential oils are the only oils guaranteed pure, organic and therapeutic/medical grade!
When diffusing oils specifically for your cat, just be careful to not use excessive amounts of essential oil, and choose oils which have lower volatility's as far as possible. In addition, ensure good air circulation especially during the diffusion process. Make sure your cat can get to 'undiffused' air at any time if possible, and only diffuse in an individual room.
Toxicology studies show that the feline liver usually needs 48 hours to process and excrete 'terpenes', thus allow 48 hours between end of last diffusion and starting another to avoid repeated exposure by inhalation.
I highly recommend a consult with a certified natural animal health coach, naturopath when you are uncertain which oil is best for the condition you are wishing to address with your pet.
Applying or Using EOs on your Cat
Cats need just a fraction of an amount of essential oils that a dog would. Placed on the body with a carrier oil or cold-diffuse the oils into the air. Young Living EO's are therapeutic grade, which makes them extremely concentrated. Again, LESS IS BETTER when using therapeutic grade EO's.
Place a drop of oil on the palm of your hand - with your other hand swirl it clock-wise and then use your finger and place on the cat. If you need to dilute the oil down a bit, place one drop in 10 drops of a carrier oil like Organic Olive or the Young Living V6 carrier oil. Therapeutic grade essential oils cannot build up. They are absorbed. You can also use a carrier oil to dilute the oil on the skin if irritation develops (a very, very rare occurrence).
Just as in a human, never drop oils in a cat's eyes or ears!!! Place a drop of oil on the palm of one hand and place oil with a finger from the other hand on the inside of the upper ear. Never down the ear.
I cold-air diffuse Young Living Essential Oils daily with my dogs, cat and African Grey Parrot in the room with me. Of course, there is good ventilation and the dogs and cat can always leave the room at will.
Some essential oils, high in phynols that are not recommended to be used with cats are: Tea Tree or Malaleuca, Oregano, Thyme, Clove, Mountain Savory, Cinnamon, Cassia, and Ravensara.
Essential Oils when Diffused (cold air diffuse only) will remove metallic particulates and toxins from the air, increase atmospheric oxygen, increase ozone and negative ions in the area and destroys odors.
Young Living also makes essential oil-infused products like Animal Scents Shampoo (cleans animals thoroughly and gently without the harshness of sodium lauryl sulfate and other ingredients found in pet care products) and Animal Scents Pet Ointment (instead of relying on drugs, this soothing ointment is enhanced with nature's most antiseptic essential oils).
