The Holiday Season: A Time for Giving

Online animal radio show hosts a bevy of guests to support two animal charities and an upcoming documentary on animals

RIO RANCHO, NM November 16, 2008 – The holidays are upon us with excitement in the air as people bustle about looking for the perfect gifts for their loved ones. One radio show though is hoping that people will choose to give to help animals and children who aren’t as fortunate.

The online radio show, Animal Talk Naturally, has pulled together a team of twelve guests for their annual Christmas show to raise funds for two special charities that help both animals and children and one upcoming documentary film on animals.

On December 17, 2008 beginning at 2:30 PM Eastern, Animal Talk Naturally will host a two-hour Season of Giving show through their regular platform on BlogTalk Radio at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/animaltalknaturally to raise funds for Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch (http://www.crystalpeaksyouthranch.org) - helping rescue horses and kids, Paws and Think (http://www.pawsandthink.org ) – putting together at-risk shelter dogs with at-risk youth, and Animals in Paradise (http://www.animalsinparadise.com ) an upcoming documentary film about the eternal lives of animals.

Each of the twelve special guests - who are each giving of their time and talent - will share a unique message during the show, and there will also be Christmas music provided by Jean Wenzel and Mary Buddemeyer-Porter.

The hosts of the show, Dr. Kim Bloomer & Dr. Jeannie Thomason, are asking businesses to get involved and support these very special charities that rely solely on donations to do the work they do.

“We’re hoping that businesses will step up and provide giveaways to anyone in our listening audience who donates $50 or more to at least one of the charities or the documentary film during the live two-hour show.” comments Dr. Jeannie Thomason. “Each business who participates will have their name and website mentioned on the show and an entire year of advertising on our Season of Giving page that will remain until next year’s show!” Read the rest

Dandelion - Herbal Profile For Animals »

Dandelion

Dandelion

Dandelion is probably the most known herb in the world. It is said to have originated in Western Europe and in the Mediterranean.

Dandelion comes under the category of a bitter herb. It is believed that the bitter principles stimulate the initial phase of digestion, this involves the release of salivary and gastric juices. It is also involved in stimulating the release of bile from the liver and gallbladder.

The medicinal properties of the dandelion herb are numerous, however American herbalists use this herb primarily for its blood purifying abilities and diuretic effects. Dandelion is known to cleanse the blood and increase bile production and is often given for anemia, jaundice, arthritis, rheumatism and other toxic conditions.

The leaves contain substantial levels of vitamins A, C, D, and B complex as well as iron, magnesium, zinc potassium, manganese, copper, choline, calcium, boron, and silicon.

The substances eudesmanolide and ermacranolide are the active constituents in Dandelion and are unique to this plant. This plant produces a mild diuretic effect and reduces serum cholesterol levels. Dandelion root is used to improve appetite, minor digestive problems, and works as a milk laxative.

Some modern naturopathic veterinarans and physicians believe that it can help detoxify the liver and gallbladder. Clinical trials have shown Dandelion to be effective in treating pneumonia, bronchitis and upper respiratory infections. It also helps with kidney function, pancreas, spleen, stomach, osteoporosis, abscesses, anemia, boils, breast tumors, cirrhosis of the liver, fluid retention, hepatitis, jaundice, rheumatism and warts. Dandelion may even aid in prevention of fungus infections, and external and internal malignant growths. It is also used to treat skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis, and arthritis conditions.

Yes, you may harvest and use the dandelion that grows in your yard however, ONLY if you have not used any chemical pesticides or fertilizers on where they are growing or the surrounding areas.

Dog Memory & Intellegence »

This post was in my drafts folder for some reason and I wanted to share it with you all today. :-)

In my never ending quest and thirst for knowledge, I came across this great article that I wanted to share with you all. Most likely, most of us who live with dogs already believe and realize that dogs are more intelligent then most non-animal lovers like to think. No, they don’t think like we human’s do, God made them unique and wonderful in their own ways but here is some great food for thought and even bragging rights for you share with those who think dogs are “just dogs”.

The intelligence of the dog is among the highest of all the animals, maybe higher than we give him credit for. Although his brain is proportionately only half as large as ours, he is certainly the most intelligent of domestic animals.

As with humans, individual intelligence varies greatly according to inherited genes. While no one breed can be truly said to be more intelligent than another, some breeds that have been selectively bred for work ability are often brighter and more receptive than those bred primarily for purely physical attributes.

Whether a dog is a mixed breed for purebred, studies have shown that neither is much more intelligent than the other. However, dogs that have been exposed to a more varied lifestyle, both indoors and out, and with both human and animal interaction, does show more intelligent behavior.

A Season of Giving: Animal Talk Naturally Radio Show Guests To Join Together To Share Special Message Of Giving

Authors, radio show hosts, artists, and charities join together to share the true spirit of this holiday season

RIO RANCHO, NM November 6, 2008 – The United States is going through a tumultuous time with an economic downturn while waiting to elect their next president. In the midst of the turmoil a group of authors, artists, radio show hosts, and charities have joined together to share a poignant message of giving during this difficult time.

While these show guests all come from different walks of life they all share two things in common: their Christian faith and the love of animals. Each of the twelve guests will be sharing their special Christmas message. The show will also include music from two of the participating artists.

On December 17, 2008 beginning at 2:30 PM Eastern, A Season of Giving show will begin on the Animal Talk Naturally platform through BlogTalk Radio at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/animaltalknaturally that will shine the spotlight on the work of three special organizations that are giving so much to help animals and children – Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch (http://www.crystalpeaksyouthranch.org ), Paws and Think (http://www.pawsandthink.org ), and the upcoming documentary film, Animals in Paradise.

For a true Season of Giving the show hosts are asking businesses to contact them that would like to be involved in giving gift packages to the live listening audience who donate to the special charities involved in the show. In return the show is offering all participating businesses a spot on their website’s special Christmas page until next year’s show.

“This will be a true circle and season of giving, “comments one of the show’s hosts, Dr. Kim Bloomer. “Our guests will be giving of their time, talent, services and products. Our charities give every single day as they help abused animals and children. The businesses will be giving during a time when sales are down. Listeners will be donating to our three special organizations during a slow economic time in our country. “

“Kim and I wanted to show the world how we don’t have to be afraid. Giving is what this season is all about.” commented Dr. Jeannie Thomason the other host of the show. “We hope to encourage others to do likewise, and give.”

Dog handler James Stegmeyer works with Kamilka at the new Military Working Dog Center

By MICHELLE ROBERTS, Associated Press Writer

SAN ANTONIO – A new $15 million veterinary hospital for four-legged military personnel opened Tuesday at Lackland Air Force Base, offering a long overdue facility that gives advanced medical treatment for combat-wounded dogs.

Dogs working for all branches of the military and the Transportation Safety Administration are trained at the base to find explosive devices, drugs and land mines. Some 2,500 dogs are working with military units.

Like soldiers and Marines in combat, military dogs suffer from war wounds and routine health issues that need to be treated to ensure they can continue working.

Joker and the Dolphins

Joker and the Dolphins

I, like many other people am facinated with and love dolphins. I stumbled on this wonderful little story about a dog and dolphins at DOLPHIN REEF EILAT For more pictures of Lucky and his dolphin friends please go to thier site, underlined above.

This is a story about a group of dolphins and one dog.

The story begins about five years ago. One day a fluffy gray dog waltzed his way into Dolphin Reef. We hardly noticed him, but after a few days we noticed that he kept going down to the pier and gazing at the dolphins. He would sit there for hours staring at the dolphins and, of course, the dolphins being curious creatures themselves found him very interesting.

Pets Pose Major Benefits to Humans, Children Included »

I am sure most of you read the article going around from the Academy Of American Pediatrics stating that pets pose major health risks to humans and especially to children. I personally was upset by this article and found it to be yet more propaganda to scare people and keep us from having the right to have pets in our homes.

The following is a great rebuttal/article that my dear friend and colleague, Kim Bloomer wrote on this topic:

Pets Pose Major Benefits to Humans, Children Included
by Dr. Kim Bloomer

Recently a news article was brought to my attention 8 Pets That Pose Major Health Threats to Kids - which is why I named this article in response to this most preposterous nonsense put forth by none other than the Academy of American Pediatrics. The information wasn’t provided by someone in animal science or the veterinary profession but by pediatricians! My initial reaction to the information in this article was: LIVID! I know this country has gone stark raving mad when this sort of lunacy is perpetrated under the guise of “safety”. I am utterly disgusted with this political push for safety which translated means: FORCE. Force you to surrender all your personal power so we can control you.

And the push to control everything about animals has been a constant and consistent onslaught. And now this. Telling parents that children are at risk when they own and interact with the following animals - they may as well have included the kitchen sink: Read the rest

What can you do to treat Cataracts and Nuclear Lenticular sclerosis in the Horse, Dog and Cat? »

What can you do to treat Cataracts and Nuclear Lenticular sclerosis in the Horse, Dog and Cat?

by Dr Stephen R. Blake

A Cataract is defined as any opacity of the lens of the eye. Most of the cataracts in canines and felines are hereditary in origin. There are other causes, such as congenital defects, trauma, nutritional deficiencies, vaccines, pesticides, chemicals, drugs, adhesions to the uveal and diabetes. The formation of the cataract, is the degeneration of the protein structure of the lens fibers, primarily effecting the lens cortex.

The pathogenesis of cataract formation is directly related to the metabolism of the lens. Unhealthy metabolism of the lens results in an irregularity in the distribution of the lens fibers, disruption of protein conformation, hydration, cell membrane stability and electrolyte imbalances.

Congenital cataracts are present at birth and tend to be nuclear and may also have clear cortex around them. They may stay the same or progress to mature cataracts and may or may not be inherited.

Juvenile cataracts develop before the dog becomes 1 or 2 years of age. Adult cataracts are noted in animals before they are 8 years of age. Senile cataracts are seen in older animals beyond nuclear sclerosis.

The stages of development of the cataracts begin as an incipient cataracts, which are small opacities and vision is still maintained. Immature cataracts result in vision impairment and impair light from reaching the retina. In patients with immature cataracts will still maintain tapetal reflex. Mature cataracts involve the entire lens resulting in no tapetal reflexes or retina visibility.

Nuclear Lenticular Sclerosis usually occurs in older animals and appears as a density of the lens’s nucleus. A blue-gray, cloudy appearance develops in the nucleus of the lens. Often times it is  confused with a cataract, which can be diagnosed correctly,  by performing distant direct ophthalmoscopy. Typically, signs of lenticular sclerosis begin around 6 to 8 years of age in the dog and slowly become more obvious as the dog ages. Most animals with lenticular sclerosis, appear to have normal vision except in subdued light. The difference is in the sclerotic cases, you have a translucence condition, which allow light to pass through to the retina and in cataracts you do not.

These drugs can cause or worsen cataracts: Read the rest
