(Note: this is the “recipe” I use as a preventative of the heartworm parasite)

This Heartworm parasite prevention requires a multi-faceted approach which includes a good diet and not exposing your dog to mosquitoes as much as possible.

To provide as much protection as possible from mosquitoes, we make sure there is no standing water for the mosquitoes to breed in. Prior to leaving the house and again upon returning after play or "business," I lightly spray the dogs with an essential oil spray which I make up and keep by the door. The mist is made of 1 cup spring water with 4 drops of Young Living's Geranium, Peppermint and Lemongrass oils. Shake it right before spraying. I also use this on myself as a great bug repellant. I don’t have the worries of toxic chemicals on the skin. It can be sprayed on pet bedding and outdoor areas to deter mosquitoes and other insects.

The parasite preventative program that I have my dogs on is:
During the first week of each month [for 7 days], (Based on a 12-15 pound dog (adjust accordingly)

One (1) Artemesia first thing in the morning and one (1) in the evening [as close to 12 hours apart as possible] on an empty stomach [as much as possible] so the properties have a chance to kill parasites without having to be blended with a full meal. (I have known of people to give two Artemesia Caps at bedtime instead).

Most dogs have no problems with this formula on an empty stomach. If your dog does, you can give as much food as necessary with it, but this is a rare necessity. This is like a monthly de-wormer.

One (1) HSII every few days or at least once a month. This is used to keep the heart strong.

1/4 ml Black Walnut Liquid Extract (5 to 7 drops), sprinkled over food, daily or given orally! (or sprinkle 1/4 - 1/2 a capsule of the powdered Black Walnut on the food)

Given all month long:
Four to five (4-5) days each week, I put 1 to 1-1/2 ml Liquid Black Walnut in their drinking water. (I would use 1/4 teaspoon to 2-1/2 cups of water). For two dogs, that amount lasts two days.

On the average, the heartworm program should last approximately 2 to 3 months for a 50 lb. dog!

Please Note: For the first 6 months I personally gave my dogs HSII and COQ10 Plus with their food twice a day. After that, I changed them down to HSII once every 2 or three days in the morning to support a healthy heart. and CoQ12 Plus at least twice a week.

This program has kept my dogs parasite free for annual checkups. Please use wisdom and common sense in deciding whether a natural approach is best for you and your pet family. Since an herbal approach is less expensive than the preventatives, please be sure you make the investment to have your dog tested at the least annually.
